Traditionally, clinical supervision has been a face-to-face process but online supervision via the ever growing range of video-conferencing options is increasingly common and offers the same benefits of support, reflection and skill development within a safe professional relationship. Online supervision, like face-to-face supervision, focuses on the building of a safe and trusted professional relationship, which enables the supervisor and supervisee to get to know each other, to share ideas and work collaboratively together.
Having been providing supervision online since 2011, I have many supervisees (both interstate and more local) who I have never met in person but who feel just as comfortable and well known to me as those I see in my consulting rooms.
I prefer supervision online to supervision via the telephone, as I have found that visual cues help the development of our relationship and give us both the security that we have the other’s full attention. This can be important, particularly, in the early stages of the supervision relationship, where norms and shared understanding are not yet present. In general, I do not provide telephone supervision as an entire service but I have found it to be a very useful back up!
